The Both family enjoys their quiet time together, however, that silence was disrupted first in 2007 when Jim was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Then in April of 2008, Deb got her breast cancer diagnosis while getting her bachelors degree of nursing from Capital University.
"I was assigned a research project about breast cancer and when we began doing the research project I realized I hadn't had my mammogram and I was a little overdue."
Deb had a lumpectomy and six weeks of radiation. She takes the breast cancer drug Tomoxifin for continued therapy for the next three years. The diagnosis and treatment took a toll of her three children but no one suffered more than her 15 year old daughter Sara. So she and her mom came up with a way to help her gain control. They began sewing these pillows to give to breast cancer patients.
"A lot of women have discomfort in their axillary or their armpit area and that pillow gives them support in that area and they'll walk around with it under their arm."
Now a breast health at Dublin Methodist Hospital, Deb spends hours a day counseling women, just like herself.
"I can relate to their fears and how scared they are and all the education that they need and support and encouragement. It's a crisis in their life and it's a challenge but they'll get through it."
