An emergency department isn't usually a barrel of laughs, but it was today at Dublin Methodist Hospital as a clown parade made its way through the halls.
Dr. John Glick, a partner with Patch Adams at the Gesundheit! Institute believes that humor has an important place in medicine. He taught staff at Dublin Methodist about how it lowers blood pressure and boosts the immune system.
"It engages a person's physiology in such a way that helps them relax, helps them be more receptive, and more comfortable," Glick said.
Then he danced them to the emergency room to practice what he preached.
Irene Chaussard, who wound up in the ER on her 79th birthday, loved the unexpected fun.
"They're going to make me feel so good. I don't even know I'm sick. I'm going to be going out dancing."
