Interventional Cardiology Services

Riverside Methodist Hospital > Our Services > Heart and Vascular Care >

With improvements in diagnosis and innovations in cardiac catheterization, many patients who used to require surgery can now be treated in the cath lab. This results in less pain and risk for patients, coupled with shorter hospital stays and recovery times.

Cardiologists at Riverside perform up to 65 catheterizaitons a day, a volume unsurpassed by any other hospital in central Ohio. The value of this high-volume expertise, along with the ability to handle even the most complicated cases with positive outcomes, provides excellence in heart care to patients who come to Riverside.

With 18 interventional cardiologists on staff, Riverside offers a depth of experience, a disease-centered, multidisciplinary approach, and better outcomes.

Our full range of treatment services include:

  • Coronary angiography
  • Coronary intervention

    • Stenting
    • Atherectomy
    • Thrombolysis
    • Intravascular ultrasound
    • Coronary flow reserve
  • Cardiac assist devices, including intracoronary balloon pump and cardiopulmonary support
  • Valvuloplasty
  • Patent foramen ovale closures

With improvements in diagnosis and innovations in cardiac catheterization, many patients who used to require surgery can now be treated in the cath lab. Riverside also offers these additional procedures, performed in the cath lab in conjunction with its team of vascular specialists:

  • Peripheral vascular angiography, angioplasty, and stents; excimer laser, directional and rotational atherectomoy
  • Insertion of intravascular infusion wires
  • Embolectomy and coil embolization
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm stent/graft repair
  • Carotid artery stent/graft repair
  • Limb salvage

Riverside has the only 24/7 interventional cardiology team in central Ohio for immediate response to emergency cases.

Research and innovation

Riverside interventional cardiologists and cath lab staff participate in research studies and trials to test and improve new technology and develop procedures for cardiac care.

Managed by the Midwest Research Foundation, there are as many as 100 research protocols active at any given time, adding more options for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Research at Riverside has contributed to the development and implementation of the following technology for heart care:

  • Drug-eluting stents
  • Biventricular pacing for heart failure (performed first in Ohio)
  • Stent grafting for abdominal aortic aneurysms and carotid arteries
  • Use of platelet inhibitors after angioplasty
  • Carotid stent (first approved stent in Ohio, second in the nation)

Other advances currently being explored at Riverside include:

  • Implantable chip to measure blood pressure in abdominal aortic aneurysms
  • Device to treat patent foramen ovale
  • Left atrial appendage closure device
  • Device to treat chronic total occlusion, including ultrasound cardiac catheter
