When it comes to your health, you should seek information about the quality of your hospital and medical team. In fact, we expect and encourage you to ask questions and examine our physicians and our track record. It's because we want you and your family to feel confident in the abilities of our surgeons and medical teams.
For more than 100 years, thousands of people have trusted Riverside for heart, vascular and thoracic surgery. Riverside is a nationally recognized heart care leader, performing more adult cardiac catheterizations, angioplasties, electrophysiology procedures and open-heart surgeries than any other heart hospital in central Ohio. As a result of our experience, our cardiothoracic surgery patients spend fewer days in the hospital and have lower risks of re-operation.
We hope the following information answers all of your questions. If you have any others, please contact your surgeon.
Patient outcomes
When physicians and patients are choosing a hospital for heart or thoracic surgery, the decision can be daunting. It's why we point you to some patient outcomes which reflect Riverside's standing when compared to the national average.
Riverside patient outcomes compared to national averages established by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS):
- Coronary artery bypass graft mortality rates:
- Risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality: Riverside 1.5%; STS 1.8%
- Risk-adjusted post-operative mortality rate (30 days after surgery): Riverside 1.5%; STS 2.1
- Riverside heart patients spend less time on a post-operative ventilator or breathing machine.
- Riverside 18.5 hours; STS 22.4 hours
- Studies show arterial grafts lower a patient's risk of re-operation. It's why Riverside surgeons use these arterial grafts more frequently than veins.
- And finally, Riverside heart patients spend less time in the hospital than the national average.
- Riverside 7.8 days; STS 9.2 days
Surgery and procedure volumes
When it comes to heart surgery, quantity does mean quality. Clinical research shows hospitals that perform more surgeries typically have superior outcomes.

Medication safety

In addition to being a National Patient Safety Goal of the Joint Commission, the leadership team of Riverside Methodist Hospital believes that the safe administration of any medication is of utmost importance.
Medication Safety is the responsibility of all licensed professionals.
All patients are to expect that the Five Rights of Medication Administration will be followed. The Five Rights of Medication Administration are:
a.) The Right Drug
b.) The Right Dose
c.) The Right Patient
d.) The Right Route
e.) The Right Time
Upon admission to Riverside Methodist Hospital, a thorough medication history and any medication allergies will be obtained by your doctor and/or nurse. If you have any medication allergies, these will be entered into the computer system. That way, as medication orders are placed into the computer system, they will be cross-referenced to make sure that you can safely take these drugs.
- Please be sure to bring a list of all medications and tell your doctor or nurse about any drug allergies.
During your stay at Riverside your caregivers will verify your identity by using two patient identifiers - your name and your birth date. Prior to administering any medications, the Registered Nurse (RN) will scan a barcode on your identification (I.D.) wrist band. The positive identification occurs through this I.D. bracelet barcode.
- All medications ordered by your physician(s) are entered into the computer system in the pharmacy.
- All orders are verified by a pharmacist.
- Then, the R.N. is required to confirm all current and discontinued medications prior to any medication administration.
By having all of these checks in place, you can be assured that you are receiving the correct medication.
